We spent our first full married weekend being very, well, married. By that I mean we went to Ikea and Costco. The trip was prompted by the fact that we had out grown our kitchen before we had really even moved in. I have more kitchen gadgets than the average person and we had received a lot of nice new dishes and appliances as wedding gifts. As the boxes piled up it was clear— there was no way we were going to fit it all in the three dish cabinets we had in our small apartment kitchen. No way, no how.
Don’t get me wrong, we love our little DC row house apartment. It’s just the right size for two people and one cat with a big personality. But when food is your job and your hobby like it is for me, then kitchen space is bound to be hot property. And when the kitchen is small then you have to get creative. So off we went to Ikea—the mecca of small space dwellers—with a few vague ideas. We wandered through the showcase floor, had a break of chocolate cake and lingonberry juice to discuss our options, then went to work hauling boxes to the car. We picked up a pair of cube tables to use as a coffee table, an industrial-looking shelving unit for kitchen appliances, and a sweet new chopping block kitchen island, along with S hooks and a simple shelf. Here’s how we stretched our small space and had fun while doing so—just in time for Sunday dinner.
